Von rostigen Ölfässern

zur unvergleichlichen Klangfarbe der Steelpans.

Die einzigartigen Instrumente besitzen einen ganz speziellen Charme ! Dazu ist das sogenannte "Pan", Synonym für karibische Lebensfreude, das einige bedeutende Instrument, das im 20. Jahrhundert erfunden wurde.

Es entstand Ende der 30er Jahre auf der Karibikinsel Trinidad, denn im Karneval wurde auf allem getrommelt, was Töne ergeben konnte und Not macht ja erfinderisch: leere Flaschen, Dosen, Kanister - bis hin zu ausgedienten Ölfässern.

Die gab es in Trinidad als Abfall der dort ansässigen ameri-kanischen Ölfirmen im Überfluss. Im Laufe des Trommelns verformten sie die Oberflächen, es entstanden höhere und tiefere Töne. Mittlerweile werden die Pans aus neuen Fässern hergestellt, die Tonfelder durch Hämmern nach einem ausgetüftelten System in die vorbereiteten Oberflächen "eingesinkt", die Anordnung ist bis heute nicht standardisiert.

Die Steeldrum hat sich bis zu einem international anerkannten Musikinstrument entwickelt, auf welchem nicht nur die karibischen Rhythmen wie z.B. Calypso und Bolero gespielt werden, sondern auch von Klassik über Pop bis hin zu Jazz gibt es schon einige Steelband-Versionen.

Su repertorio es amplio: con reggae, calypso, samba y soca no hay en la playa quien se escape a la sensación de estar de vacaciones, quien no sienta ganas de bailar. ¡Déjate entusiasmar por la variedad de los ritmos!

De unos barriles de petróleo oxidados

al incomparable timbre de los "steelpans"

Estos instrumentos tan únicos poseen un encanto muy especial. El “pan”, sinónimo de alegría de vivir caribeña, es el único instrumento importante inventado en el siglo XX.
Surge a finales de los años 30 en la isla de Trinidad, donde en los carnavales la gente convierte en tambor cualquier objeto capaz de emitir un sonido. Botellas vacías, latas, bidones - es sabido que la necesidad hace maestros - y finalmente barriles de petróleo de desecho procedentes de las petroleras americanas radicadas en Trinidad. A fuerza de batirlos, sus superficies se fueron abombando, emitiendo tonos más altos o más bajos.

Hoy en dia los "pans" se fabrican con bidones nuevos; las casillas sonoras, cuya distribución hasta la fecha no ha sido estandarizada, se “hunden” a base de martillazos sobre la superficie previamente preparada.

Los “steeldrums” han avanzado en su desarrollo hasta convertirse en instrumentos musicales internaciónalmente reconocidos. Con ellos no sólo se interpretan ritmos caribeños como el calipso o el bolero sino que también existen ya versiones para steelband de obras de la música clásica, del pop y del jazz.

From rusty oil barrels to

the incomparable timbre of the "steelpans"

These unique instruments have a very special charm ! The so called “pan”, synonymous of Carribbean joy of living, is the only important instrument that has been
invented in the XXth (20th) century. It came into being at the end of the 1930´s on the Carribbean Island of Trinidad, where during the carnival people used to drum on anything that would emit a tone – necessity is the mother of invention: empty bottles, tins, canisters – up to old oil barrels. And there  were plenty of these on Trinidad as a waste product of the US oil companies
established on the island. By beating them the surfaces changed their shape, emitting higher and lower tones.

Nowadays "pans" are fabricated with new barrels, the tone-fields are “sunk” by hammering on the previously prepared surfaces and up to the present their arrangement has not been standardized, giving each ‘pan’ its own uniqueness.

The “steeldrum” has developed into an internationally recognized instrument on which not only Caribbean rythms like calypso or bolero are played, but also versions for steelband of classical music, pop and jazz.
